Dealing with reactive dogs

Updated: Jul 5, 2022

Dogs sometimes can develop a grumpy attitude in many different situations. This is

common with strangers - with humans and especially other dogs. Another good

example is when dogs become dominant over toys or food. Unfortunately, there are

many cases of dogs biting people or other dogs, quite badly, and in the most cases,

the larger breeds tend to pay the price.

But no matter what happens or how it happens, it’s never the dog’s fault. They act instinctively, and it is up to their owners to take responsibility for them, since there

are a variety of dogs with different particularities. A good trainer with experience will be able to spot the source of all behavioural issues. Every dog is different, and it’s pretty normal to have a dog like that because nearly all dogs have a certain level of anxiety.

The important thing is not to delay seeking proper help, knowing that things could escalate at any moment.

Therefore, understanding their needs, and dedicating time and patience to work on them is the only way to achieve good results. In the end, despite all the challenges, it’s super rewarding when both sides start to synchronise and slowly achieve goals that had never been achieved before. Try to change the approach you usually take with your dog when it becomes

dominant, by changing the pitch of your voice, ignoring him or her, or even taking your dog for a quick walk. The key here is to change the focus, and breaking the bad habits that are already rooted in their daily behaviour.
